The celebration of Carnival has its origins in pagan festivals, such as those held in honor of Bacchus, the God of wine, the Saturnalia and the Roman lupercaux or those held in honor of the Apis bull in Egypt.
It is celebrated in countries that have a Christian tradition, precedent to Lent. The term carnival is supposed to come from the medieval Latin "carnelevarium", which means "to remove flesh" and which referred to the religious prohibition of meat consumption during the 40 days of Lent.
The streets of several corners of the Provinces of Ecuador are filled with colorful programs during the Carnival. In some areas the traditions of yesteryear are maintained that are combined with religious or ancestral beliefs.

What does the word Carnival mean?

What is the origin of the Carnival?

According to some historians, the origins of this festival go back to ancient Sumer and Egypt, more than 5000 years ago, with very similar celebrations at the time of the Roman Empire, from where the custom spread throughout Europe, being taken to America by the Spanish and Portuguese navigators from the fifteenth century.
The Carnival in Guaranda
Guaranda in carnival is a single song, created and sung by a haughty, cheerful and hospitable people capable of laughing, dancing and playing, regardless of time, so that whoever visits and enjoys it is from now on, a guarandeño from the heart
The party is complete, comparsas and dances are held in each locality of the province but officially begins a week before the national level, so on Monday with the children's carnival, the copy contest, on Wednesday the Institutional Carnival, the Thursday the University Carnival, Friday in San Miguel and in Guaranda the election of the queen, on Saturday in San José de Chimbo and in Guaranda the entrance of the Taita Carnival and the Indigenous Carnival, on Sunday the comparsa in Guaranda, on Monday in Balsapamba and Caluma to end on Tuesday in Echeandía.
However, the official program, clubs, neighborhoods and institutions carry out programs until Tuesday when the festivities in the urban area conclude.

Corn is used in the party, because it is consumed in different ways: tender or dry, natural or processed as cooked corn, roasted, mote, in the form of flour when making the "Chiguiles" and wrap with the tender leaves of the same corn ; in the form of alcohol in the Chicha de Jora, fermentation of the corn that is germinating or corn flour to whiten the people who participate in the party.

Carnival of Ambato 2019
The celebration of the Fruit and Flowers Festival, was born as a response to the situation he experienced, the city of Ambato after the earthquake of August 5, 1949, an earthquake that destroyed the city and many of the cantons that in that era they formed the province of Tungurahua.
