What is the origin of the Carnival?
The origin of its celebration seems probable of the pagan holidays, like those that were realized in honor to Baco, the wine god, Saturnalia and the Roman lupercales, or those that were realized in honor of the bull Apis in Egypt. According to some historians, the origins of this festival go back to ancient Sumer and Egypt, more than 5000 years ago, with very similar celebrations at the time of the Roman Empire, from where the custom spread throughout Europe, being taken to America by the Spanish and Portuguese navigators from the fifteenth century.

The couplets sprout with such spontaneity in the province that it gives the impression that it is not the people who make them, but the couplets are there, who walk the streets, run in the water of the rivers or sit in the doorways. and in the handles of the road in search of the lips that sing them.

Thousands of couplets run on the lips of the troubadours, from the low subtropical areas of the mountain to the snows of the Cordillera, because also there in the páramos of the Andes, our indigenous singer in Quechua sings his songs of Carnival.

The couplets refer to women, children, neighbors, love, hardships, joy, sadness, typical dishes, mother-in-law, visitors, guitar, among others.
