Given its geographical location and being in the center of the area through which the transfer of water from the Daule to the Santa Elena Peninsula passes, the canton can achieve a great development, especially in the agricultural aspect. It is the smallest canton of the province, but with great economic potential. In its soil grow woods such as guayacán, cedar, laurel, pechiche, balsa, guadua and bamboo, which not only supply the needs of the area but are transported to different collection centers in the country.

Traditional religious faith.- The veneration of its patron saint, the Virgen del Carmen, dates approximately from 1870, when Doña Juanita Tutivén, a local woman married to Aniceto Ortiz, offered inn to merchants who had as their obligatory passage Lomas de Sargentillo. One day, a merchant who was traveling through the town, seeing the devotion of his hosts for the Virgin of Carmen gives Dona Juanita an image of it, which she carried with her.
