This region was known at the beginning of the colonial era as "Province of Yumbos", and was inhabited by the Niguas, the Yumbos and the Tsáchila. Their territories, unexplored almost in their totality, were legally in charge of the Governation of Caráquez, but after the dissolution of this entity their territories were directly related to the political administration of the Corregimiento of Quito and the geographic administration of the Governorate of Atacames, also denominated as Gobernación de las Esmeraldas. In the eighteenth century the area entered a stage of reduction and withdrawal of the native inhabitants.
